Just before Christmas I went for a weekend away in Southwold, one of my new absolute favourite places. It’s so quaint and completely beautiful, just like Salcombe, the North Norfolk coast, and all the other beautiful seaside villages the UK has. But what I think is so special about Southwold is that it isn’t completely empty all winter, holiday homes don’t sit unused – it’s a working village, with a village spirit that somehow makes you feel like home.
The fact that it isn’t just a holiday destination means that its not full of bucket and spade shops and abandoned ice cream huts, it harbours lovely villagey pubs, beautiful walks, some gorgeous boutiques and even a members only cinema.
It is a perfect weekend get away, whatever the time of the year, and a wonderful place to make memories. Having said that most of mine are of eating and drinking too much, leaky wellies halfway through a marsh field and freaking out about a bull. But generally over-fed and happy!
And anyway, I would travel pretty much anywhere for hot chocolates as good as these, which we got in the pier cafe ‘The Clockhouse’. Whoever serves hot chocolate with flakes, maltesers, whippy cream, and marshmallows deserves a knighthood in my opinion!
So if you have a chance, or are looking for somewhere to visit, I’d definitely recommend Southwold, it’s beautiful and perfect for a romantic weekend or a lovely place to go with kids.
Lots of Love.
